Since its grand opening on September 20, 1927, the Poncan Theatre has been a cornerstone of Ponca City’s cultural heritage. Designed by the Boller Brothers as an atmospheric theater, the Poncan dazzled audiences with its ornate ceilings, state-of-the-art Wurlitzer pipe organ, and an innovative balcony design without supporting pillars. It quickly became a premier venue for vaudeville acts, silent films, and later, Hollywood’s golden age talkies.
Over the decades, the Poncan stage has hosted legendary performers such as Will Rogers, Ethel Barrymore, John Philip Sousa, and more modern icons like Blake Shelton, Crystal Gayle, and The Gatlin Brothers. Despite facing closure in 1985, dedicated community members rallied to restore its glory, leading to its placement on the National Register of Historic Places and a full-scale renovation in the 1990s. Today, the Poncan Theatre continues to shine as a live entertainment venue, movie house, and community hub, preserving its legacy as one of Oklahoma’s most cherished historic landmarks. Whether you’re a history buff, a live performance enthusiast, or a lover of classic cinema, the Poncan Theatre offers a glimpse into the golden era of entertainment. |
