Located at 1000 East Grand Avenue in Ponca City, this National Register of Historic Places landmark offers visitors a glimpse into the life of Ernest Whitworth Marland, an oil magnate, U.S. Congressman, and the 10th Governor of Oklahoma.

History of E.W. Marland’s Grand Home
E.W. Marland moved to Ponca City in 1908 with a dream of striking oil—and he did. His Marland Oil Company, founded in the early 20th century, was responsible for discovering massive oil reserves, making him one of the most powerful oilmen in the world. At his peak, it was estimated that Marland controlled one-tenth of the world’s oil reserves. His company later evolved into Continental Oil Company (CONOCO), now known as ConocoPhillips.

In 1914, Marland commissioned renowned architect Solomon Layton, who also designed the Oklahoma State Capitol, to create a Renaissance Revival-style mansion for his family. Completed in 1916, the 16,500-square-foot mansion was ahead of its time, featuring central vacuuming, an automatic dishwasher, and Oklahoma’s first indoor swimming pool.

Marland and his wife, Mary Virginia Collins, shared the home with their adopted children, George and Lyde (Lydie). The mansion served as a symbol of the family's success and influence before Marland moved into the grander Marland Mansion in the late 1920s.
